Invitation to visit The South Tower at Wentworth Woodhouse

The Landmark Trust is delighted to invite members of the Lady Mabel Old Students Association to visit The South Tower at Wentworth Woodhouse on Saturday 7 March 2026.

You may have heard that building conservation charity the Landmark Trust are working with the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust to restore the South Tower and create a beautiful self-catering apartment for two people. We have just launched a fundraising appeal and if we can raise the needed funds, we hope to be on site this summer.

This is an exclusive opportunity to see inside the South Tower before our restoration project at this monumental Palladian mansion begins.  You will be able to tour the South Tower, learn more about the history of this part of this 18th century house and see how we hope to restore it using traditional craft skills. The South Tower doors will be open to visitors from 10.15am until 4pm but numbers are limited. It is free to visit the South Tower but places for the tours should be booked in advance. LMC Honorary Degree with Sheffield Hallam University

Through the sterling work of two of our members they have currently
have had 600 applications. To date 509 have been verified with a view
of the university granting honorary awards.

The late Dame Julie Kenny was a good supporter in liaising with the
University. The new Chancellor and Vice Chancellor of the university are
pro alumni and especially keen on women in sport which has worked in
our favour.

The university has acknowledged the significant amount of work that
had been done regarding gleaning information and recognised that some
students had died awaiting their honorary degree.

There is an opportunity to hold a degree ceremony in the house. The
University provides the certificates with the Vice Chancellor awarding
them. At the moment negotiations are being made with the house but
given the numbers who may attend the ceremonies may need to be held
on two consecutive days.

This initiative has taken 2 ½ years on the back of an article by Bedford
College who were awarded honorary degrees. So far there are
applicants from every year group since the conception of the College

Latest news from Wentworth Woodhouse

A recent email from Wentworth Woodhouse said that The House will be open as soon as it is safe to do so.

Hopefully the gardens will be open early in July, along with outdoor events.

The results of the art competition: Life and Times of The Big House; were posted, and there will be an installation in the Autumn on the front lawn called The Flock. This will consist of 10,000 wooden birds, on which people can write their experiences of the pandemic.

If any members have tickets for future events, they will be contacted by Andrew Jones – The Bookings Officer, as soon as possible.

In order to raise money for the The House, 500 original Westmoreland roof tiles have been made into unique works of art, and are on sale for £200 each.  Each one has been put into a beautiful box.  Other methods of fund raising are by shopping with Ebay, John Lewis, Argos, ASOS, M&S, Expedia etc.  Further details can be obtained through the Wentworth Woodhouse website.

It is good to know that the roof repairs are back on track.

A committee meeting is planned for September 20th, after which, the newsletter will be circulated.  Hopefully, there will be news about the 2021 reunion!
